The world needs laughs, and the Community Pregnancy Center needs funds — so organizers hope a comedy show this Saturday will provide both.

The comedy show will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Solid Rock Church in Monroe, featuring “clean” comedian John Branyan. The event is a fundraiser for the center in Middletown at 2230 Central Ave., which like many nonprofits has been hit hard by funding cuts, said director Candice Keller.

In particular, Keller is concerned about the center’s Positive Life Choices program, which promotes abstinence and discourages such practices as teen drinking

“We considered doing away with the program completely. With this event, it just felt like this is summer, it’s family time, and this is a Christian comedian — it seemed like a great idea,” Keller said.

Workers at the center found Internet clips of Branyan and thought he would be an ideal fit. Branyan calls his work “comedy that doesn’t leave a filthy residue.”

The comic, who hails from Kokomo, Ind., tries to find humor in daily life without resorting to lowbrow jokes.

“I’ve always been disappointed that comedy is associated with vulgarity and smut. I’ve endeavored to make people laugh without making people blush,” he said.

“A lot of my material is everyday stuff, and that’s funnier than stuff you make up. It’s my job to more or less keep my eyes open for funny stuff and report it to people who may not be looking,” Branyan said.

Tickets are available at Family Christian Bookstores and Itickets.com. They will also be available at the door the night of the show.
