Meredith Glick Brinegar, Ph.D., said some degree of anxiety is normal in the constantly changing coronavirus situation.

“I think a lot of the fear is just the not knowing what’s coming,” Glick Brinegar said.

She suggests finding ways to create a sense of normalcy. That includes establishing a routine.

“That helps us have some purpose or some structure to our day,” Glick Brinegar said.

Health experts are currently stressing the need for social distancing, but Glick Brinegar said it is still important to connect with people.

“That sense of feeling not alone in this is going to be really helpful,” Glick Brinegar said.

She also said it is important to get outside, exercise, meditate, and journal.

“If we’re writing things down it gives us some space, some distance from what we’re thinking and feeling, and instead of it swirling so much it can help us have a place for it,” Glick Brinegar said.

Glick Brinegar said limit coronavirus news consumption to 30 to 60 minutes a day.

She said people should talk to a professional if they cannot stop thinking about coronavirus, have changes in sleep or eating, or have thoughts about harming themselves.
