Coronavirus: Local layoffs hit area businesses

Several area businesses notified the state this week of layoffs they are having to do as the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip the Miami Valley.

Gissing, an automotive supply company in Sidney, announced it will have to lay off 120 employees beginning this week.

Gissing told state and local officials that the layoffs are temporary as a result of COVID-19 and the downstream effect on the business.

“Because of the uncertainty of the situation, however, we are providing this notice designed to comply with federal law,” an Ohio WARN notice submitted by Gissing read.

Ross Casting and Innovation also notified the state of its plans to temporarily shut down for an indefinite period of time due to the evolving pandemic, according to an Ohio WARN notice.

Ross’ closure will impact all of the businesses 167 employees.  The company did say at the ended of the shutdown it anticipates recalling the majority of the impacted workforce.

Ultimate Home Services, LLC, which is an independent contractor that works under contract with Lowe’s to provide measurement services, installation and post-installation support for floor covering needs, notified the state of its plans to lay off 62 employees.

Ultimate Home Services has a location in Moraine and anticipates recalling employees who are laid off in approximately 90 days.
