County awards contract for Courthouse work

The Miami County commissioners Thursday awarded the contract on a multi-million dollar project to update infrastructure of the county Courthouse and the neighboring Safety Building to a Fairborn company that submitted the lone bid.

The bid from Staffco Construction of Fairborn totaled about $6.3 million for a base contract and a series of alternate projects. The project estimate of just over $4.5 million was set by Garmann-Miller Architects of Minster. The consultants were hired by commissioners to design HAVC and security upgrades along with plumbing modifications for the 1880s Courthouse and the Safety Building, constructed in the early 1970s.

The contract approved was for less work that totals $4,977,000. That was possible because the contract was bid for base HVAC and plumbing upgrades to the buildings plus 11 possible individual projects and a maintenance agreement. Projects not included in this agreement can be addressed in a new bidding process, the commissioners were told. NANCY BOWMAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER
