County Recorder Brandon McClain told News Center 7’s Josh Jackson he referred the case and an investigation has been launched into the homeowners’ association and its treasurer.
Earlier this month, the HOA’s treasurer filed liens on 233 of the 311 homes in the neighborhood. Some of those liens are as high as $6000.
The liens are specific to the HOA and do not have anything to do with county property taxes.
Community members who talked to News Center 7 say they don’t know why the treasurer is doing it, but it is untimely because many of them have been displaced from the Memorial Day tornadoes or they are living in their homes while trying to rebuild.
“When we attempt to engage with the treasurer of the HOA to ask why you keep doing this, his answer is this is what the bylaws say, this is what the rules say,” Norman Scearce said.
“One thing we know is that everything that is lawful is not expedient. It may be lawful in this regard but it’s definitely not beneficial to the people in this community who are trying to pick up the pieces of their lives,” he said.
