Davisson, principal of Piqua High School, to retire

PIQUA — The search is on for a new principal for Piqua High School.

Katherine “Kathy” Davisson, principal of Piqua High School, announced her retirement, effective July 31, at the end of March.

The Piqua City Schools board of education accepted her retirement resignation at its March 24 board meeting.

Davisson has spent the last 15 years at the high school, two years as assistant principal, 13 years as principal. The Tippecanoe High School and Wright State University graduate spent 30 years in education.

Prior to coming to Piqua, Davisson was assistant principal and interim principal at Northwestern High School from 1989-95. Prior to that, she taught English and coached at Lima Senior High, Tippecanoe High School, and Trotwood-Madison High School, where she was also a unit principal.

“She’s been very helpful and very caring about her students,” said Polly Reynolds, secretary to the Piqua City School District’s assistant superintendent. “She’s very professional and the kids liked her.”

“Katherine Davisson has been a definite asset,” said Piqua school board president Mimi Crawford.

Davisson helped the district move from academic watch to an excellent-rated school district, Crawford said. “She’s made that a terrific mission.”

“I have been blessed to work with outstanding educators and I am very proud of all of the students that I have worked with over the years, some of whom have gone on to do many great things,” Davisson said.

While looking forward to having more personal time, “I haven’t really excluded the possibility of continuing to work in administration in a district that will rehire retired staff, or working in some other educational setting,” she said.

By being on the Southwest District Athletic Board she’s had “the opportunity to see some of the best athletes in Ohio,” she said.

As for retirement, “I am looking forward to playing golf with my husband and friends, catching up on reading, and walking my dog,” she said.

She said she plans to volunteer in the Piqua community, especially at the kindergarten center.

“I have been blessed with a great family, understanding husband, and wonderful friends, and I have been honored to work in a profession and in a school district that puts kids first,” she said.

Davisson’s salary is $112,777, according to Jeff Price, treasurer for the school district. Her job, a 12-month position, has been posted with a salary offering between $88,450 and $114,805, depending on the candidate’s experience, he said.

The application deadline is 10 a.m. April 19. The board said it hopes to reach a decision by May 18, with the chosen candidate to begin no later than Aug. 1.

Candidates for the job must have a master’s degree, a valid Ohio high school principal certificate or license, experience working with students, and experience with building level administrative duties.

All application materials must be submitted through the Dayton Area School Employment Consortium Web site. For an online application, visit www.piqua.org, and choose “employment,” and then “online application.”
