Dayton area gas prices increase

Dayton — Average retail gasoline prices in Dayton have risen 10.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.23 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 391 gas outlets in Dayton.

This compares with the national average that has increased 2.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.31 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Dayton during the past week, prices yesterday were 34.0 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 20.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

The national average has increased 5.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 49.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"Gasoline prices are starting to pick up steam as a majority of states see their average rise over last week, a function of the season's theatrics coming into view: refinery maintenance and the transition to cleaner gasoline pumping up prices,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Dayton on Monday morning is $2.24 with prices stable, according to GasBuddy.com. The cheapest gas is $2.02 per gallon at Costco on Cornerstone North Boulevard and Wilmington Pike.

In the Hamilton area, the average gas price is $2.25 per gallon with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.04 per gallon at Speedway on Montgomery Road and Mills Avenue and Thorntons on Reading Road near Tennessee Avenue.

In the Springfield area, the average gas price is $2.24 per gallon with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.13 per gallon at Marathon on Moorefield Road and Security Drive.

Areas near Dayton and their current gas price climate:

  • Ohio: $2.22 per gallon up 10.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.11 per gallon
  • Columbus: $2.25 per gallon, up 14.2 cents per gallon from last week's 2.10 per gallon.
  • Cincinnati: $2.25 per gallon, up 13.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.11 per gallon.

"Some states gas prices may slightly lag the upward trend being seen in 38 states as remaining winter gasoline inventories are purged, DeHaan said. “However, as we grow closer to baseball's Opening Day, the nation's motorists will be more likely to strikeout when trying to find $1.99 gas prices, which remain at just 8,000 stations across just handful of states.”

Gasoline prices on March 6 in Dayton have ranged widely over the last five years according to GasBuddy historical data:

  • 2012:  $3.68 per gallon
  • 2013:  $3.57 per gallon
  • 2014:  $3.57 per gallon
  • 2015:  $2.39 per gallon
  • 2016:  $1.89 per gallon

“In a sign of what's to come in some of the nation's largest cities, motorists in Southern California have become the first in the lower 48 states to see the ugly "3" showing up on gas station displays at street level, DeHaan said.
