Man killed after truck hits tree in Dayton Tuesday

A 64-year-old man died after his truck went off Shoup Mill Road in Dayton and crashed into a tree Tuesday afternoon.

Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger identified the victim as Mathew Paulus, of Dayton.

The crash was initially reported at 3:12 p.m., when a caller told 9-1-1 operators that there was a red pickup truck crashed in that area, and that the driver needed a medic.

The caller said that the driver of the pickup seemed to be trapped in the vehicle, and said the vehicle appeared to be smoking.

Emergency crews arriving on scene warned that the driver may be dead when they arrived.

According to a crash report, the truck was heading west on Shoup Mill Road at Riverton Road when Paulus apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit construction barrels, causing him to go off the right side of the road.

Paulus drove through a grassy areas and drove back onto the road before crossing several lanes and driving off the left side of the road, hitting a tree.

Paulus was wearing a seat belt, according to the crash report.
