Dayton, Trotwood post offices spared

U.S. Postal Service leaders have decided not to close post offices in Dayton and Trotwood.

The Paul Laurence Dunbar station at Westown Shopping Center and the Trotwood post office at 34 Beardsley Road were among 3600 branches considered for closure. The post office is facing major financial issues, and is trying to adjust accordingly.

People in Dayton and Trotwood collected thousands of signatures in support of these two branches.  Several local city councils passed resolutions of support.

A U.S. Postal Service study says it would be financially advantageous to move Dayton’s 400-employee mail processing operation from East Fifth Street to a site in Columbus in 2012 or 2013.

Postal Service managers will discuss the proposal and take public comment in a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sinclair Community College Conference Center, 444 W. Third St. in Dayton.
