Discarded smoking materials caused the fire, according to officials.
All of the apartment tenants were able to escape without injury, but two firefighters and one police officer sustained minor injuries.
According to reports, the fire began on the third floor balcony and spread through an apartment to the roof of the building. The apartment complex had a total of twelve units.
Residents said they heard the smoke alarm around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday morning before calling police.
Laura Accuntius said, “I was asleep. I heard banging on my door. I’m a heavy sleeper and then I heard banging again and people shouting that I needed to get out.”
The sprinkler system was not activated allowing the fire to continue. According to reports, firefighters are still looking for the cause of the flames and why the sprinklers did not work.
The state fire marshals office has been called in to help investigate the fire.
