Dogs crowding animal shelter after owner drops off 21 more

Butler County facility close to capacity; owner expected to drop off last of his 77 pets soon.

HAMILTON — Butler County’s animal shelter is “busting at the seams” as a former Hamilton man continues to turn over his 77 licensed dogs, according to Animal Friends Humane Society Director Meg Stephenson.

Dog owner Gary Roberson dropped off 21 dogs Sunday, June 20, Stephenson said, and another 25 last week.

She said Roberson, who now lives in Kentucky, is expected to bring the remaining 31 dogs to the shelter this week.

“We also have the general public dropping off animals they can no longer care for or they have found,” Stephenson said.

The shelter is still under its capacity of up to 300 dogs and cats, but it is getting close, she said.

Seven of Roberson’s dogs were sent to animal rescue operations Sunday. Dogs dropped off included poodles, Labradors, pit bulls and Rottweiler mixed breeds. “We’re really seeing a variety of animals,” she said.

But what’s really needed is for people to adopt the animals that were already there as they continue processing the new dogs, Stephenson said. “People who contact us about these specific animals don’t really help us at this point.”

Roberson had purchased a home on Millikin Road in Fairfield Twp. to accommodate his pets, but received complaints from neighbors. Township zoning regulations limit the number of pets to four, said Fairfield Twp. zoning official Skylor Miller. Roberson moved back to his home in the 1100 block of Ross Avenue in Hamilton, but the complaints kept coming.
