TRENTON — The Edgewood City Schools Board of Education wants a recount.

The board voted Wednesday night, May 19, to ask the Butler County Board of Elections for a recount of the May 4 primary results certified earlier in the day.

Edgewood spokesman John Thomas said the formal call would be placed to the election board to get the process started. He said it was unclear how long the process would take.

Board of elections Director Betty McGary said a requested recount would cost the district $50 per precinct.

In addition to the recount, the board approved a resolution of necessity to put the substitute levy on the August ballot. The move came just hours after the board of elections certified results of the primary, which resulted in the defeat of the Edgewood levy by 18 votes — two votes too many to trigger an automatic recount.

When originally passed in 2005, the levy generated $2.5 million annually ($12.5 million total) and cost owners of a $100,000 home approximately $211 per year. If approved, residents would not incur any new taxes as a result of this substitute levy.

“The deadline to approve the second resolution is Thursday,” said district Treasurer Randy Stiver. “Without the approval, we could not move forward.”

Superintendent Larry Knapp has said no areas of the district’s budget would be left untouched if the levy was not approved.

Thomas said it was too soon to announce specific cuts, especially dealing with personnel. The board will meet again Monday, May 24, to discuss possible budget cuts for the next school year.
