Explosion lifts manhole cover in downtown Dayton

HAZMAT was called to the scene of an explosion that lifted a manhole cover in downtown Dayton this morning.

Emergency crews responded to the incident around 11 a.m. in the 400 block of West Third Street.

Dayton Power & Light responded and called the fire department. Fire crews then asked for HAZMAT to respond.

Officials said there are high CO2 readings following the incident, but the cover is open and is ventilating, so the area is safe.

DP&L is working to figure out what caused the incident.
