Family displaced, house likely total loss after fire in Dayton

UPDATE @ 6:34 a.m.:

A family was displaced and a house will likely end up as a total loss after a fire in the 600 block of Mia Avenue, according to Dayton Fire Department District Chief Cheryl Clark.

Clark said that fire crews arrived on scene and found four people outside the home. They told crews that they had been asleep when the fire began, but one of them woke to get something from the kitchen, discovering the fire.

There were no injuries due to the fire.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and the living room of the house, but the district chief said that both were fully engulfed in flames. In total, there was an estimated $45-50,000 in damage, but would likely end up as a total loss for insurance purposes, she said.

A fire investigator is on the way to the scene, and the cause is unknown, although the residents told crews that they had not been cooking anything.

The cold weather added a new layer of difficulty to fighting the fire, District Chief Clark said. In particular, the water from the fire crew’s hoses create a lot of ice, which can be a hazard for firefighters entering and leaving the structure, as well as for cars driving past the location later. In addition, if water is not kept moving, there is a danger it could freeze in the hoses.

In order to deal with these challenges, Clark said, the trucks use re-circulation pumps to keep the water moving, and leave hoses slightly open when not in use. Crews were also putting down sand on the ice on the road to provide traction for cars driving over it.
