Free recycling for electronics, waste

HAMILTON — The Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District is offering free programs for residents to recycle electronics, Freon from appliances and household hazardous waste.

“These free, long-term collection programs provide residents with a convenient and responsible way to recycle,” said Anne Fiehrer Flaig, solid waste district coordinator.

“Individuals should never deposit these items ... in Ohio’s landfills where they have the potential to leach harmful materials into our water sources.”

Electronics recycling

Butler County residents may recycle their old computers and televisions on the second and third Saturdays from April to September. The program runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the county engineer’s office at 1921 Fairgrove Ave. in Hamilton.

Accepted items include televisions, hard drives, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, desktop copiers, fax machines, power cables, pagers, cell phones, digital equipment, software and compact discs. There is a limit of five computers and two TVs per household.

The company 2TRG will process the equipment, shredding all computer hard drives and erasing information from them. The company deconstructs computers and televisions at its Cincinnati facility and maintains a zero-export policy of equipment to third world countries.

Last year, the program processed more than 350,000 pounds of televisions and computer equipment. This represents a 55 percent increase over 2008.

“Televisions and computer monitors contain an average of six pounds of lead,” Fiehrer Flaig said. “Newer style flat-screen monitors contain mercury.”

Freon appliances

The county’s Freon appliance collection program runs from April through September. Residents can contact Unwanted Appliances at (888) 886-9268 to schedule pickup.

The company will pick up appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers at the curb or driveway and remove the Freon. There is a limit of two “like” appliances per household.

Household hazardous waste

The solid waste district will resume its weekly drop-off program for household hazardous waste in June.

Residents can drop off items every Thursday from June 3 through September 30 from 2 – 7 p.m. at Environmental Enterprises located at 10163 Cincinnati Dayton Road in West Chester Twp.

Accepted items include paints, automobile fluids, oils, lacquers, antifreeze, pesticides, mercury, household and car batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, adhesives and pool chemicals.
