HAMILTON — IceFest returns after the holidays, but the event needs a boost in sponsorships.

IceFest, running from Jan. 21-22, makes ice a little more tolerable in winter by featuring ornate ice sculptures, this time with a “Great Books in Ice” theme.

“Sponsorships are still available for as low as $400 for one block of ice,” said Sue Samoviski, event chair. The event is provided by the nonprofit organization the City of Sculpture, which wants more small businesses to participate. A sign with the sponsor’s name will appear next to each sculpture.

The books theme is shaping up nicely already, with a range of themes, Samoviski said. One represents the novel “Moby Dick” with a sculpture of Captain Ahab and the whale that obsesses him; the conductor from Chris Van Allbusrg’s “The Polar Express,” will, appropriately, be carved in ice, Samoviski said.

But not all the sculptures will have watery or frigid themes. One of the sculptures will pay tribute to a famous local resident,

“We’ll have Joe Nuxhall rounding third and heading for home,” Samoviski said, referring to the late Hamilton native, Reds legend and his catchphrase, which was also the title of a biography.

IceFest will have two other events associated with it. BookFest, a book-signing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 22, will happen at Ryan’s Tavern, 241 High St. ArtFest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 22 and 23, will happen in the Government Services Center downtown. ArtFest is being presented in conjunction with Art on Symmes.
