Grand jury gets case against woman accused of taking $500K from her job

Middletown woman told police she needed money to pay for her children's tuition., other expenses.

MIDDLETOWN — The case against a Middletown woman — accused of taking more than a half-million dollars over a five-year period from the Middletown Medical Group — was bound over to a Butler County grand jury.

Susan Best, 51, of Santa Fe Road, appeared Wednesday, July 8, in Middletown Municipal Court, where she waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

The former doctor’s office accounting employee was arrested June 15 on charges of grand theft and tampering with records, both third-degree felonies.

Middletown police say Best admitted to taking about $500,000 from her job.

The medical practice determined money had been taken since 2004, and internal investigations revealed bank deposit slips had been altered before money was delivered to the bank, according to the report.

Middletown police Detective Steve Winters said Best told police she had expenses, including paying her children’s tuition to Bishop Fenwick High School.
