BODY CAM: Greene County Jail escapee arrested, sentenced in separate case Friday

A man, who less than 24 hours ago was accused of escaping the Greene County Jail, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in an earlier drug case.

David Suarez, 33, of Fairborn, was sentenced in Greene County Common Pleas Court Friday morning.

Suarez was convicted on seven drug charges from a September 2017 incident.

Suarez is accused of leading deputies on a manhunt Thursday after he escaped the jail from the outdoor recreation area with the help of fellow inmates, Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer said.

Body camera footage of Suarez’s arrested was obtained by this news organization through a public records request.

Suarez broke the heavy-duty straps on the bottom of the fence surrounding the outdoor area located on top of the jail, Fischer said. Suarez crawled under the fence, went down a fire escape and grabbed a bicycle nearby, Fischer said.

He rode the bicycle down West Main Street and was spotted by coroner investigators near a McDonald’s just a couple of blocks away. The investigators reported Suarez, and he was captured in Xenia around 10 a.m. According to Fischer, there is video that shows other inmates keeping guards busy as Suarez escaped.

Additional charges will be filed against Suarez and perhaps other inmates, Fischer said. The outdoor area is currently shut down.
