Greene County Coroner identifies 4-year-old girl

The girl collapsed at a daycare center in Beavercreek on Wednesday morning and later died at a local hospital.

The 4-year-old girl who died after collapsing at a KinderCare in Beavercreek has been identified as Alexandra Giles of Wilberforce.

A preliminary cause of death had not been determined Friday, but there is no indication of foul play, according to Bill Harden, chief investigator with the Greene County Coroner’s Office.

Alexandra’s mother Nichole Collini works at the KinderCare, 2221 N. Fairfield Road, and told police that she was not aware of any health problems, according to a Beavercreek Police incident report released Friday.

Police were called to the child care center around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday on a report of a 4-year-old not breathing.

When police arrived, the center’s assistant director was performing CPR on Alexandra, who was transported to Soin Hospital and later pronounced dead at 11:24 a.m., according to the report.

Collini told police that she had left on her break to take her other child to a doctor’s appointment. The center’s director called her to inform her about Alexandra. Collini arrived at the center after the medics had left with her daughter, so a police officer drove her to the hospital.

An employee of the center told police that she was in an outside play area with Alexandra and 10 other children when she observed Alexandra laying on the suspended bridge on the play equipment. The employee said she had just spoken with Alexandra two minutes before she collapsed.

This employee said she noticed no problems with Alexandra when she spoke to her and at first didn’t think anything was wrong when she saw her down on the suspended bridge.

“She saw her laying down on the bridge which is not uncommon for the children to do since it moves when others walk across it. (The employee) asked Alexandra to get up, to keep from getting hurt,” according to the police report.

The employee went to Alexandra when she didn’t respond and discovered that she was blue, laying on her right side and facing west.

The employee also told police that she didn’t see any other children step on Alexandra or bump her on the bridge.

The employee sought help from the center’s assistant director, who had just stepped outside to count the children. The assistant director picked Alexandra up and took her to an office, while someone else called 911.

Colleen Moran, spokeswoman for KinderCare’s national office in Oregon, issued a statement that said, “We are heartbroken that a child passed away Wednesday after collapsing on the playground at our Beavercreek KinderCare Learning Center. Even more devastating, the child’s mother is a teacher at that same center. Our hearts go out to this family and the entire Beavercreek community.”

A search of the center’s inspection reports with Ohio Job & Family Services database revealed no significant issues.

A gofundme.com online account for $5,000 in donations was started for the Giles family. Donations had reached more than $4,600 Friday afternoon.
