Greene County Fair is celebrating 178 years

The Greene County Fair opened this weekend at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia and will run through Saturday, Aug. 5.

Now in its 178th year, the event is the oldest county fair west of the Alleghenies and will feature a variety of rides, games, food and entertainment.

Daily gate admission is $6 and free for any child under 9 accompanied by an adult. Wristbands for fair rides that open Monday at 4 p.m. run $18 and a discounted $12 on Wednesday’s family night.

While rides will not be open Sunday, fair-goers can enjoy a calf scramble latter in the day and a free show by The Van Dells in the entertainment center at 8:30 p.m.

Monday will feature the SMASH IT Demo Derby with $5 grandstand seating and $15.00 ticket prices for infield seats.

Bull riding, barrel racing and calf riding will take place on Tuesday with a $5 discounted admission.

Wednesday’s family day coincides with the fair’s food pantry discount day where admission is reduced to $3 for those who bring a non-perishable food item. Fairgoers can experience the Wednesday’s Celebrity Pig Showmanship at 5 p.m. featuring local officials, radio and TV personalities.

Also on Wednesday and Thursday, harness racing will be offered for free, according to a press release.

Friday and Saturday fair rides will open early at 1 p.m. with a tractor pull scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and ATV and Truck drag racing at 7 p.m. Saturday.
