Crews responded to the 2200 block just after 6 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage behind the house, officials say.

The homeowner said she was sleeping when she heard a strange noise and once she looked out her window and noticed her garage was on fire, she called 911 and alerted neighbors.

“I went banging door-to-door to make sure they got out of the house in case the fire spread”, said the homeowner.

The heat from the fire did melt the siding on the back of the home, but no one was injured and the fire did not spread, according to District Chief Paul Raisch.

There were miscellaneous items inside of the garage including tools and a refrigerator, but all were lost in the fire.

Damage estimates were not immediately available, but officials are considering the structure a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
