Jogger’s fracas in street with police ends with his arrest on drug-related charges

The attempted mixed martial arts moves and his subsequent refusal to comply with verbal orders from officers led to his being punched and hit with knee strikes in the Monday night arrest on North Sperling Avenue, according to a Dayton police incident report made public Tuesday.

Christopher Walker was ticketed for jaywalking and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on two felony counts of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor charges including resisting arrest and obstructing official police business. Bond has been set at $5,500.

He's also being detained on a warrant filed by Xenia police.

According to the incident report, police responded on a call about a man jogging in the middle of the 100 block of North Sperling Avenue. One of the two officers, William Overholtz, said he recognized Walker from a previous incident that involved his having a gun.

As police began to pat down Walker, he tried to run. Overholtz said he grabbed the man’s clothing and Walker tried to deliver the first of the elbow strikes aimed at the officer's head.

Overholtz said he ducked the second attempted elbow strike and delivered a right fist to Walker's face. Walker went down, tried to get up, but then curled up and refused to show his hands.

According to the report, two other police officers arrived and Walker complied several punches to the face and knee strikes to the ribs later.

The officers said they confiscated suspected methamphetamine, along with the suspected meth pipe, and "multiple different cell phones and tablets" they found on Walker.

Overholtz and Officer Brandon Bunch were able to get Walker into a police cruiser for the ride to Grandview Medical Center. Another officer said he saw Walker, on cruiser cam, remove more suspected drugs from his pants pocket and try to hide them in the back seat. Police confiscated those suspected drugs as well.

Sgt. Joe Setty arrived on scene to begin the administrative investigation related to the use of force, according to the report.
