Bub Britton, founder and owner of Fatback's Barbecue at 1334 Linden Ave. just west of Smithville Road in Dayton, said his business is growing and profitable, but he is looking to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren.

“I have five granddaughters, and our first grandson is due next month,” said Britton, a Dayton native and 1977 graduate of Belmont High School. “Five of our six grandchildren live in Columbus. My wife retired last year, and we want to spend more time with them.”

Britton smokes his meats for 12 hours overnight.
Britton said he is willing to teach the new owner the techniques and recipes that have made Fatback’s a popular destination for barbecue enthusiasts and have generated strong catering business in addition to the restaurant’s retail sales.

“I’m not going to sell it to just anybody. I want someone who has a passion for barbecue,” Britton said. “I’ll stay on as long as it takes to do it right.”

Business is strong, and sales have grown every year, Britton said. He acknowledged that the sale will not be easy.
“This is a bittersweet thing for me,” he said. “We built this thing from the ground up.”
