United Dairy Farmers entered the highly competitive local doughnut market this week by launching its own line of square donuts from a new production facility it built in southwest Ohio.
“Now We Make the Donuts!” reads a series of three banner posters that greets UDF customers at UDF stores across the Dayton and Cincinnati area. “New from our family bakery.”
And the Cincinnati-based chain wants so much for its customers to try the new doughnuts, it is giving away one free glazed doughnut to those who also purchase any sized coffee or fountain drink, for a limited time.
Our news partners at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati reported back in April that UDF officials had decided to make its own doughnuts, ending a doughnut contract with the local Busken Bakery and instead building an $11 million “Fresh Foods” production facility on Kemper Road in Sycamore Township in suburban Cincinnati. The new line of doughnuts is the first food produced at the facility, which is part of an ongoing strategy to improve fresh food offerings in UDF stores, WCPO-TV reported.
UDF operates nearly 200 stores in three states, including six in the Dayton area, and nearly a dozen in the broader Miami Valley.
The Dayton area has been ground zero in a bit of a doughnut war between two large international chains, Dunkin’ Donuts and Tim Hortons, and it is also home to several independent doughnut shops, several of which have been around for decades.
