Lakota East principal applies for Springboro superintendent job

SPRINGBORO — Lakota East High School Principal Keith Kline is among 20 applicants from five states vying for the Springboro superintendent’s job.

Kline, formerly a principal and band director in Kettering and other Dayton area districts during the past 27 years, joined Lakota Local Schools in 1997 an assistant high school principal. He also has served as principal of Freedom Elementary School, and led the Lakota East Freshman School in 2006 before later taking the helm of the main East campus.

Also on the applicants list for the top job at Sprinboro Community Schools is Eugene Lolli, an assistant principal at Springboro High School who is the district’s interim superintendent during a search conducted by the Ohio School Boards Association.

Springboro Superintendent David Baker resigned, effective July 1, after 10 years, to take a part-time job with the Warren County Educational Service Center.

For the first time in three years, Springboro was rated Excellent, rather than the top ranking as Excellent with Distinction, according to data released Friday by the Ohio Department of Education.

Voters have rejected four consecutive school levies, most recently by 111 votes in May 2009. The board has cut 30 jobs and closed Jonathan Wright Elementary School among more than $3 million in budget cuts.

“I think we have a superior school system. I think we have a superior community,” board member Kelly Kohls said. “It doesn’t surprise me that people from across the country would want to be part of that.”

The board is expected to meet Sept. 8 to narrow the list to finalists.

While suggesting the board might wait until after a Nov. 2 levy election, board President Mike Kruse said it was unclear how quickly a new superintendent would be selected.

“We can move really quickly and have it done in September if we need to,” he said.
