“We liked his passion for the Dayton-area and for individuals who have been discriminated against,” Jones Baker said of why Brown was a good candidate for the position.
She added that she and other Urban League officials believe that he will further the goals of the civil rights organization.
The ULGSO plans to hold an event in Brown’s honor sometime next month.
Brown, an attorney, will have an office at the MVUL headquarters, located at the Opportunity Center, 907 W. Fifth St. in Dayton.
The Cincinnati native said he will focus on restoring the name of the Urban League in the region.
“I’ve worked in Dayton many years, so I am really looking forward to coming in and restoring relationships, making new partners and making a great name out of the Urban League,” Brown said. He added that he was a Montgomery County assistant prosecutor from 1992 to 1994 and also worked for Legal Aid Society of Dayton.
The executive director search started in December, a year after the Miami Valley Urban League was formed. The MVUL was created in 2012 after the collapse of the Dayton Urban League, which shut its doors in 2010 because of financial reasons.
The Cincinnati chapter is currently funding the operations of the MVUL.
“I want us to embark on a strategic plan process and get a lot of input from the community in terms of what’s needed,” Brown said. “I want to restore the glory of the Urban League in the Miami Valley community.”
Brown graduated from Walnut Hills High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Ohio State University and received his law degree degree from the University of Cincinnati.
He is the pastor of Second Chance Ministry in Mount Healthy and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He has three adult sons and five grandchildren.
