Liberty Twp. to charge for use of park shelters

Money from fees will help fund maintenance for township parks.

LIBERTY TWP. — Trustees here agreed Tuesday, Feb. 2, to stop the historical park shelter free-for-all beginning next month.

Starting March 1, Liberty Twp. will begin charging for the use of its shelters at various parks throughout the township. The costs approved unanimously Tuesday are $30 for residents and $60 for nonresidents for four-hour blocks. A reservation application is now required.

Township Administrator Dina Minneci said Tuesday the amounts were determined after researching what other nearby cities and townships charge for the use of their shelters. She said the township has wanted to charge for shelters for years.

“There is work and extra resources that are incurred by the township when the shelters are reserved,” she said, including cleaning before and after a group or community event.

Trustee Christine Matacic said she knows of residents from outside Liberty Twp. using the shelters because they know they’re free.

“I think this way, the shelters will be a little more available to our residents,” she said.

Money made from reservations will go back into the general fund, which helps fund maintenance for township parks.

“I’m not big on increasing fees or taxes, but I feel this one is appropriate,” Trustee Dave Kern said.
