LifeSpan wins national grant for mentoring

HAMILTON— LifeSpan, a not-for-profit social service agency, serving Butler and Warren counties, has won a 12-month $18,500 grant by the national membership organization Alliance for Children and Families to serve as a mentor to a peer organization.

The grant is part of the New Age of Aging, a major five-year initiative designed to help prepare human service organizations to better serve older adults, as well as utilize their many skills through volunteerism or professional assistance, according to LifeSpan.

The $2.6 million New Age of Aging initiative is funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies.

Because of its involvement with programs and services for older adults that may serve as examples to similar organizations, LifeSpan will support a peer organization in its efforts to gain capacity to provide similar services, according to the agency.

LifeSpan will be mentoring Family & Youth Counseling Agency in Lake Charles, La. LifeSpan was one of 10 agencies selected though a competitive, national process to receive the grant.

LifeSpan staff will attend the National Mentoring Initiative/Leadership Academy in Milwaukee, in May 2010 to learn strategies and develop skills that will reinforce the benefits of the mentoring relationship and support their yearlong experience.

“This grant enables us to share our expertise and help strengthen the profession,” said LifeSpan’s CEO Cynthia Stever. “We are proud to have this opportunity to help guide a peer in meeting this tremendous challenge.”
