Local Airman returns from 6 Months in Afghanistan

A local airman returned home to the Miami Valley on Friday and was greeted by dozens of family and friends.

Air Force Lt. Col. Roman Underwood has spent the last six months in Afghanistan serving our country. Underwood was greeted by his wife, Cheryl, son Avery and daughter Brynn, along with dozens of other family and friends at Dayton International Airport.

In talking with Lt. Col. Underwood, he said, “Just happy to be home.” “I missed a lot this summer and I am ready to be home.”

His wife, Cheryl, said she is “overwhelmed with a lot of emotions,” She said the family was going to get pizza for dinner at her husband request.

“It’s crazy and amazing to have him home, Cheryl said. “He’s missed birthdays, holidays and school happenings.” She said he has a lot of catching up to do.

News Center 7 asked Cheryl what the experience of having him away was like and she said, “it’s really tough.” “But we have family and friends for a reason and they were very helpful.”
