Lots to do at Narrows Nature Reserve

School’s been out long enough now that some parents are probably starting to hear the whine, “there’s nothing to do.”

However, there’s always something to do at the Narrows Nature Reserve at 2575 Indian Ripple Road in Beavercreek.

For instance, “Ready to Explore More Camp,” for ages 12 to 15, will allow campers to explore a wetland, forest, creek and other wildlife habitats.

The camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13-14 and then continue with a two-night overnight camping experience beginning at 9:30 a.m. July 15 and ending at 3 p.m. July 17.

Registration is required and the cost is $130 per Greene County resident and $150 per nonresident.

There’s also a summer camp for preschoolers, ages 5 and 6.

“Nature’s Spies and Gizmo Gadgets” meets from 1 to 3 p.m. July 20-24. Campers will make their own spyglasses and “exploring gizmos” for use in search of such things as fossils, frogs and insects.

Registration is required and the cost is $40 per Greene County resident and $50 per nonresident.

Two sessions of Big Backyard, a popular preschool program, are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 15 at the Narrows Reserve Nature Center.

Preschoolers, ages 3-6, along with their adult companion, will join a park naturalist for a hike and a story and then create a craft. The topic for the July session of Big Backyard is “Animal Camouflage.”

The entire family can participate in the free “Bug Fest” at 7 p.m. July 11 in the Narrows Reserve’s main parking lot. The event will include hikes, games and crafts.

Greene County Parks also is conducting its annual Greene County Passport Program.

The program includes free hikes and bike rides throughout the county parks. Participants accumulate miles and then, at the end of August, are entered to win a Greene County Parks gift basket.

One of the upcoming hikes will be at the Narrows Nature Reserve. The “Nocturnal Hike: Wildlife Neighbors” will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 25.

For registration and additional information on any of these programs, contact Greene County Parks at (937) 562-7440 or visit the park department’s Web site at www.co.greene.oh.us/parks.
