LEBANON — Now that spring is here, orange barrels will soon “blossom” and will be widespread across Warren County as crews begin another road construction season.

“Actually, this is going to be one of our biggest years,” said Neil Tunison, Warren County engineer. “We have a couple of big projects this year.”

Tunison said 2011 road and bridge construction projects will total just more than $23.9 million and will be funded through local, state and federal sources. He said the county’s share for funding the projects comes from fuel taxes, license plate permissive fees and some funds generated by the county sales tax.

Those major projects include:

  • The intersection improvements at Columbia Road and Mason-Morrow-Milgrove roads and the replacement of the Columbia Road bridge in the city of Lebanon. The project cost estimate is $1.23 million.
  • The widening of Mason-Montgomery Road between Fields-Ertel and Parkway Drive in Deerfield Twp. The project is estimated to cost $1.41 million. Tunison said the project will add a northbound lane to help clear traffic off of the northbound exit ramp off Interstate 71.

“More than 80,000 cars a day go through that intersection and is one of the busiest in southwest Ohio,” he said. “It’s an intersection within an interchange and there are a lot of turning movements that cuts down on capacity and leads to congestion.”

Tunison said the county is waiting for clearance from the Ohio Department of Transportation to begin the bidding process. He expects the project to begin in July and will take about four months to complete.

  • Improvements to Bethany Road in Deerfield Twp. is another project that will begin at the end of April. The cost estimate for the project is $6.8 million for the improvements between Butler-Warren Road to the Mason city limits.
  • Improvements to Butler-Warren Road is another joint project between Butler and Warren Counties. The project which will be in Deerfield Twp. as well as in Liberty and West Chester Twps. in Butler County, is estimated to cost $11.3 million.
  • Replacing the Zoar Road bridge in Hamilton Twp. will be a county project and is estimated to cost about $180,000.
  • Improvements to Gard and O'Neall roads in Wayne and Massie Twps. are estimated to cost $620,000 and will be funded by the two townships and the OPWC.

More than 17.6 miles of roads are expected to be resurfaced that will cost an estimated $1.77 million, he said. The county’s portion will be about $721,000, Tunison said.

He also said the county is covering the costs to replace bridges on Lehman Road in Harlan Twp. for about $30,000; and on Morningstar Road in Franklin Twp. for about $50,000.

ODOT will have its share of orange barrels sprouting around the county with several new and ongoing projects.

Sharon Smigielski, ODOT District 8 spokeswoman, said the reconstruction of the Warren County portion of Interstate 75 will continue and is expected to be completed in June 2012.

The state is also continuing its work to replace the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge on Interstate 71, which is Ohio’s tallest bridge. She said that project is expected to be completed by November 2015.

Other ODOT projects include:

• Ramp work on Interstate 75 at the Ohio 73 exit. Smigielski said the work encompasses the southbound exit ramp and includes the intersection of the exit ramp and Ohio 73 in Franklin. She said the work also includes adding a turn lane and other traffic upgrades needed for the turn lane.

• A joint project with the city of Mason for improvements to U.S. 42 south of the city.

• Landscaping work at the I-75 and Ohio 63 interchange.

• Repairing a bridge on Ohio 741 in Springboro about one mile south of Ohio 73.

• Resurfacing of Ohio 48 in Clearcreek Twp. between Ohio 73 and Ohio 122; A portion of Ohio 48 between Morrow and Blanchester will also be resurfaced.
