Man killed, vehicle crashes into creek near I-75 in West Carrollton

A 21-year-old Fort Wayne, Indiana, man is dead following a crash that ended with a vehicle in Holes Creek near I-75 in West Carrollton over the weekend.

A man called 911 around 8:45 a.m. Sunday after he was driving in the area and spotted the vehicle overturned in the creek.

“I was just coming down Central Avenue,” he told police dispatchers. “There’s a vehicle upside down in the creek. I didn’t know if you guys knew about that or not.”

The creek runs into the Miami River at I-75.

“I was just driving by and I just glanced over that way and I saw it there,” he said. “I didn’t see anybody on the bank or anything like that.”

Crews responded and found Leeroy M. Heard Jr. dead at the scene.

The circumstances leading to the crash are still under investigation. Police said it appeared the vehicle went off I-75 south,  went through the median and over the embankment.

It is not clear how long the vehicle was in the river, but police believe the crash happened overnight.
