Nakis was found Tuesday afternoon inside 1531 Chester Blvd., dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Richmond police said, Lt. Jon Bales noting that a family member was in the house at the time. Nakis was the registered owner of that address, police said.
Nakis also owned Carver's, a family restaurant in Richmond, police said.
Bales and Officer Ron Pennington, a police department spokesman, said the connection between the victim and Thompson is that the baby she was carrying was his.
Nakis voluntarily came in to speak with police soon after Thompson was found in her car in the 700 block of South 20th and G streets on April 30, suffering from as many as three mortal gunshot wounds to the chest. It was during that visit with police that Nakis told them he was the father of the unborn child, Pennington said.
But Nakis was not the father of the 13-year-old girl who found her mother in the car that morning, Pennington said.
Although Nakis was not considered a suspect, he had "not been eliminated" from the investigation, according to police who also said they were not entirely sure of the relationship between Nakis and Thompson, who was a sixth-grade teacher in the Fayette County School District.
After securing a search warrant from a judge, police entered the house Tuesday night to search it for evidence.
A note that read "I'm sorry" was left at the scene, according to police. It is believed the suicide was committed with a .45-caliber gun and that Thompson was shot with a gun of another caliber.
