O’Brien reelected county GOP chairman

John W. “Bud” O’Brien was re-elected to a four-year term as Miami County Republican Executive Committee chairman during the party reorganizational meeting earlier this month.

O’Brien, a county commissioner, has been the chairman since 2000. Other party officers are Judy Weaver, chairperson; Richard Adams, Central Committee chairman; William Wolke, Central Committee vice chairman; Marty Baker, secretary; Frank DeBrosse, Executive Committee vice chairman; and Matt Gearhardt, treasurer. Tippecanoe High School wins national quiz award

The Tippecanoe High School Academic Quiz Team was awarded the national championship in the small public school category at the National History Bowl and Bee Championship last weekend in Washington, D.C.

The team overall finished 19th out of more than 170 teams, the highest the team has placed at a national tournament in its 22 years, said Joe Bellas, team adviser. Tipp City team members were seniors Laurel Spangler, Nathan Mahaney and Michael Gross; junior Faith Walker; and freshmen Gabe Parsons, Ethan Heitkamp and Michael Vestey.

Spangler also competed in the National History Bee, placing 42nd in the country in the varsity division and Vestey placed 86th in the junior varsity division. NANCY BOWMAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Ruby Ball celebrates 40th anniversary

Reservations are still available for Saturday’s 40th anniversary of the Ruby Ball. The formal ball will have a 1940’s theme with Tom Daugherty’s Swing Shift band. The ball begins at 6:30 p.m. with ballroom dance instructions.
