Miami’s West Chester campus will have courses for those 50 and older

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Miami University has expanded its Institute for Learning in Retirement program by adding courses at the Miami Voice of America Learning Center.

The program will be on Wednesdays and is part of more than 35 courses ILR offers in the fall term, from Oct. 10 to Nov. 11, according to a release from Miami.

The ILR is for those 50 and older who want to learn about science, the arts, society, technology, literature, languages, business, economics, and other subjects. Opportunities are presented to become acquainted with community needs and to link individual talents and interests to those needs, according to Miami University.

For the fall session, “courses range from Victorian Cincinnati and French Mystery Writers to Holiday Origami, a survey of revolutions from 1776 to 2011, and an exploration of George Gershwin and his times,” a release said. “West Chester classes include Living Green, Saving Green, a class on exploring the Cincinnati Art Museum and its treasures, A Wine Tour of the United States, and Exploring Options for a Comfortable Financial Future. In addition, “Cinema Comedy Classics” will be offered at the Learning Center in West Chester on Wednesday evenings.”

”We are excited to have the opportunity to extend ILR programs to the Learning Center, opening up more opportunities for residents of West Chester, Liberty Township, Mason, and the surrounding areas to enjoy what the Institute offers,” said Judith de Luce, chair of the ILR board of directors.

A generous grant from the Davis-Wendell Fund of The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty is helping to launch the first year of ILR programming at the VOALC. A single membership fee of $100 enables participants to take as many classes as they wish this fall, the release said A one-time rate of $75 is available to first-time ILR members.

The Institute also arranges special day trips, which this fall includes a tour of Music Hall in Cincinnati and the opportunity to attend a rehearsal of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. A second special trip is to the Ghyslain Chocolate Factory and Wayne County Historical Museum in

Indiana.
