Middle school students bring ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ tunes to stage

TRENTON — Edgewood Middle School students will sing their way through the Constitution’s preamble and dance through “Conjunction Junction” when they present “Schoolhouse Rock Jr.” Friday and Saturday on the high school’s stage.

Production director Libby Wolf said the fond memories of watching the “Schoolhouse Rock” series of Saturday morning cartoons from the 1970s and ’80s convinced her it was time to bring the musical to Edgewood.

“The tunes are so catchy,” Wolf said. “I knew it would be a fun show to do and it would give a lot of students the chance to be on the stage.”

Wolf said she was surprised at how many of the seventh- and eighth-grade students were familiar with the original animated series, considering it debuted more than 20 years before they were born.

“I remember watching it in the fifth grade,” said Ben Warner, an eighth-grader. “The songs just stick in your head. It’s hard to forget them.”

Because of the choral nature of the show, every one of the nearly 40 cast members spend the entire time on the stage; there are no “starring roles,” said Wolf, which allowed many students their chance to shine.

“It’s different from other shows because all of us had to learn every song in the show,” said eighth-grader Cora Reiff. “Between the songs and the dance moves, there was a lot to memorize.”

Reiff said the show has not only been fun to perform, but also has proved useful in the classroom.

“I had a social studies test the other day and found myself singing through the preamble because there were the answers!” said Cora.

Seventh-grader Jacob Campbell said the audience can look forward to some special effects and surprises from “Schoolhouse Rock Jr.”

“We are doing some effects in ‘Interplanet Janet’ with some black lights,” said Jacob. “There are a few other things we have planned.”

Performances are 7 p.m. Friday, March 26, and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at the high school.
