“Rogers and Hammerstein broke the mold with this show,” said senior Michael Henry, who plays Emile de Becque, one of the main characters. “It is traditional in every sense and we have worked hard to not to change that.”
The school’s last foray into Rogers and Hammerstein was “Cinderella.” Henry said the differences between the shows highlights the school’s versatility.
“It’s a little bit scary because these aren’t fairy tales we’re doing,” said senior Anthony Buchanan, who plays Lt. Cable. “These is real life and we want to make sure the audience can connect with it.”
The music may be more than six decades old, but senior Lauren True, who plays female lead and Navy nurse Nellie Forbush, said the songs stand the test of time.
“They aren’t dated or old in any sense,” True said. “Songs like ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair’ stick with you and tell a story that is timeless.”
Junior Zac Pruett said despite the serious themes, there is still fun to be had.
“Lauren and I have a number where she dresses as a man and I wear a coconut bra and grass skirt,” Pruett said with a laugh. “It’s one of my favorite parts of the show and it will be something to see.”
“This show could be done 50 years from now and it will still be strong and relevant,” Sophomore Kyle Myers said. “It is worthy of that recognition.”
Performances run at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 11. All shows will be at the Middletown High School Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for adults at the door.
