The date would have been Prince Rogers Nelson's 58th birthday.
"The proclamation issued today by Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith is meant to celebrate Prince's life and many contributions – not only in arts and culture, but also in his many acts of service to his fellow Minnesotans," the governor's office said in a statement Monday.
Prince, whose cause of death was revealed to be a fentanyl overdose, was widely celebrated as a talented musician who stood up for artists' rights and created "The Minneapolis Sound."
Dayton recently declared May 23 as Beyonce Day in the state as she was in Minneapolis for her Formation World Tour that day.
For Prince Day, Dayton encourages Minnesotans to wear purple in Prince's honor.
