The Monroe Fire Department battled a house fire early this morning in the 6600 block of Hamilton Middletown Road.

Monroe Fire Chief John Centers in a release said flames were shooting through the roof of a two-story wood frame house when units arrived at around 4:30 a.m. The fire was doused about an hour later.

Apparently the exterior doors on the house were padlocked so firefighter had to break into the house to knock down the rest of the fire. The homeowner who lives next door told fire officials the previous tenant vacated the property Thursday.

Monroe sent six units to fight the fire and received mutual aid from Middletown, Liberty and Fairfield townships.

The fire is under investigation.
