Evacuations lifted after natural gas leak in downtown Dayton

UPDATE @ 11 a.m.: 

A natural gas leak that forced the evacuation of some downtown Dayton buildings has been contained, according to fire officials.

Vectren crews were able to clamp the ruptured line before 10 a.m. but will require further repairs.

The line was struck by a work crew installing new sidewalks and curbs on North Jefferson Street. Crews were removing old concrete when the line was hit, fire officials said.

Work crews and workers in evacuated buildings were allowed to return to work before 10:30 a.m.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported.

FIRST REPORT

A natural gas leak has forced the evacuation of some downtown Dayton buildings Friday morning.

Crews responded to the area of North Jefferson and East First streets around 8:50 a.m. after a work crew struck a gas line, according to dispatch records.

Fire officials said the new CareSource building under construction and other buildings in that block have been evacuated.

Vectren crews have just arrived at the scene, according to our crew.

No injuries or illnesses have been initially reported.
