Neighbor saves man’s life with CPR

LIBERTY TWP. — When Judy Porges saw her husband, Ron, motionless next to their lawn mower in their backyard, she ran outside screaming for help as she thought to herself, “I’m not ready to lose him.”

Ron Porges had gone into cardiac arrest. Neighbors Colleen McPheron and Chris and Teri Hermann heard Judy’s cries and ran outside; as McPheron called 911, Chris and Teri Hermann worked together to administer CPR.

“I haven’t been trained in CPR, but my wife was. She told me what to do, and I did it,” Chris said.

Chris revived Ron in his backyard, but as emergency responders transported him to Mercy Hospital of Fairfield, he had to be revived again.

“I guess I was clinically dead,” said Ron, who has since made a full recovery.

The Hermanns received a proclamation from Liberty Twp. for saving Ron’s life, but the Porges can’t put into words how thankful they are.

“What do you say to someone who saved your life?” Ron said.

“I just feel like the luckiest person in the world that our neighbors were there,” Judy said.

Since the April 3 event, Judy and Ron have signed up for CPR training. Chris also plans on registering.

“I hope to be able to help someone like our neighbors helped us,” Judy said. “You never know when you’re going to need it.”
