New Carlisle was awarded $12,490 to purchase 128 washable safety gloves and 79 washable safety hoods, under the Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Grant Program. The program helps departments purchase safety gear, exhaust systems and specialized washing machines that remove residue collected on firefighters’ gear during fires, according to the release.
“Firefighters are routinely placed in harm’s way while performing their job duties, because they are threatened by both acute injury and long-term health complications,” Dr. Abe Al-Tarawneh, superintendent of BWC’s division of safety and hygiene, said in the release. “Protecting them from harm keeps them healthy and on the job, and that means our communities are safer, too.” .
Bellefontaine Fire & EMS was awarded $10,516 from the grant.
The Bureau of Workers Compensation has awarded 496 grants totaling $5.1 million, according to the news report.
