The commission voted unanimously Feb. 7 to make the financial contribution to the United Way of Miami County. The county now is largest in the state without a 211 helpline connecting people with services such as senior services, food, shelter, healthcare and veterans’ assistance, among others. A plan outlined to the commissioners last year by United Way representatives called for contracting for the service with a call center, the United Way of Cleveland.

“This is much needed in our county,” said Commission President Greg Simmons. Sean Ford, United Way of Miami County chief executive officer, agreed, saying the money would help “kick start” the program. The money will pay for the first two years.
“They will be able to call somebody 24-7 … and talk to someone specifically designated for Miami County,” Ford said.
