HAMILTON — Gel-filled pacifiers sold with the brand names Nuby, Cottontails and Playschool have been recalled because the liquid inside the teethers are contaminated with bacteria, according to the manufacturer Luv N’ Care and the Food and Drug Administration.
The bacteria, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans, generally is not harmful. But infants and children with weakened immune systems can experience stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and more serious disease, if the teether becomes punctured and they ingest the liquid gel.
FDA officials advise consumers who have pacifiers with these brand names to immediately stop using them and discard or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the company between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time at (800) 256-2399 ext. 3106.
