The tree took down power lines when it came down around 7:15 p.m. on the vehicle, crushing its top and collapsing the suspension, the sheriff stated in a release.
The tree was 18 to 24 inches in diameter for most of its length from the trunk to the first forks about 25 to 30 feet up the tree, the sheriff said.
The driver was struck because broken power lines landed across the tree and were touching the vehicle. She and Anna Fire and Rescue crews had to wait for Pioneer Electric to cut the power. The driver, identified as Bonita Nicodemus, was able to climb out on her own but was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital to be checked out for a headache.
A crew from the Shelby County highway department brought out a large track hoe and cut and removed the tree from the vehicle and roadway, Lenhart said.
