Here’s a closer look at some of the Dayton-area restaurant highlights from July.
New
Tokyo Grill Sushi & Hibachi Buffet
A new restaurant has opened in the Washington Twp. space that has been vacant since the celebrated restaurant Rue Dumaine shut its doors in July 2017.
Tokyo Grill Sushi & Hibachi Buffet is located at 1061 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Washington Twp.
The new restaurant serves a variety of bowls, featuring hibachi-grilled chicken, shrimp, steak and vegetables; Poke Bowls, including a Hawaiian Classic and Salmon Lover; soups and salads; and boba tea, according to the new restaurant's web site. Tokyo Grill Sushi & Hibachi Buffet is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
Gold Star Chili

Gold Star reopened its Franklin location after major renovations, and the restaurant’s newly expanded menu now includes grilled-to-order burgers, chicken sandwiches, and deli-style sandwiches.
The restaurant at 711 E. 2nd St. had shut down in early July for the significant makeover, which a Gold Star release said “melds the traditional Cincinnati chili-parlor experience and contemporary design into a comfortable, welcoming environment guests will love.”
Hoshi Ramen
A new Japanese restaurant called Hoshi Ramen has opened at 2820 Colonel Glenn Highway across from Wright State University.
Hoshi Ramen's menu includes multiple styles of ramen, made in authentic Japanese style.
Some of the restaurant’s other ramen dishes will be based on vegetable broth or chicken broth. Bao Bun (sandwich-style dish with a steamed bun), Chahan (A Japanese fried-rice dish) and Donburi (vegetables and a protein served over steamed rice) dishes are also available.

World Piece

A new Springboro-based food truck that promises to offer “a taste of the world, one bite at a time” has hit the streets starting this week and has already scheduled 50 appearances throughout southwest Ohio.
World Piece's menu "will change from time to time and from event to event," and the content will be available on the food truck's Facebook page, owner John Hanson said. The full menu includes items such as street tacos, half-pound burgers in a variety of styles, German sausage sandwiches, salads, wraps, and specialty egg rolls, among other items.

Flyby BBQ
A Beavercreek restaurant that got its start as a food truck has re-launched its mobile unit.
The independent and locally owned Flyby BBQ restaurant that opened in February at the Mall at Fairfield Commons has lined up a handful of gigs and is “looking for more,” according to Flyby’s founder, David Butcher.
Flyby is a fast-casual barbecue restaurant with a build-your-own-meal ordering system similiar to Chipotle or Subway. It serves barbecue sandwiches, bowls and platters featuring hickory-smoked meats, a variety of toppings, and regional American barbecue sauces, as well as comfort-food-style side dishes, craft beer and sodas.

Rusty Taco
Rusty Taco will open its third Dayton-area restaurant across from the Dayton Mall in space that was recently vacated by El Toro Bar and Grill.
“We have finally sealed the deal — it is happening,” John Slaughenhaupt, co-founder and co-owner of ThreeWitt Enterprises Inc., Rusty Taco’s Dayton-area franchisee, said of the restaurant coming this fall to 2335 Miamisburg-Centerville Road across from the Dayton Mall. The space housed an El Toro restaurant until a few months ago, when El Toro relocated to the former TGI Fridays up the street.
Rusty Taco, then known as R Taco, launched its first Dayton-area restaurant in March 2017 on Brown Street near the University of Dayton, and followed with its second location across from the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek in November 2018.
Chilli’s Wings & Rings

A restaurant called Chilli’s Wings & Rings is in the works on Salem Avenue in Harrison Twp., although it has some regulatory conditions to navigate and permits to obtain before it can open, township officials say.
Signage has been installed at the new restaurant coming to 3736 Salem Ave., a Facebook page has been created, and the property owner has applied for several permits required before opening.

OinkADoodleMoo & Brew
A locally owned and independent barbecue chain will open a new-concept restaurant, pub and music venue in a Miamisburg space that has housed a pub for more than four decades.
The new venture will be called “OinkADoodleMoo & Brew,” and it is coming this fall to the former Dark Horse Tavern space at 209 Byers Road in Miamisburg.
The establishment will offer table service and will be family-friendly. There will be seating for 219, including about 150 in the dining room. An upstairs room that seats about 75 will be reserved for private parties and events.
Texas Beef & Cattle
A new barbecue restaurant is in the works in downtown Dayton.
The project is still in an early developmental stage, but Texas Beef & Cattle Company founder and owner James Nuñez, who operates a restaurant in the Wright-Dunbar District west of downtown, confirmed to this news outlet that he has submitted a letter of intent to lease space on the ground floor of the CareSource building at 217 N. Patterson Blvd.
His downtown restaurant, Nuñez said, would offer an expanded menu, including grilled steaks and seafood, as well as vegetarian offerings.
Siam Pad Thai

The owner of the former Siam Pad Thai restaurant in Kettering, which shut down in September 2018, assured her customers in a Facebook post on July 25, that she is moving ahead with plans to reopen on Patterson Road just west of Shroyer Road in Dayton’s Patterson Park neighborhood as soon as possible.
There has been a delay in construction progress, the restaurant’s owner said, because crews “paused with us to go help the tornado victims,” Pakawan "Fon" Christman and her family told the restaurant’s followers.
Christman told this news outlet in April that the new restaurant will have a new name. Massaman Thai Cuisine will be located at 467 Patterson Road just west of Shroyer Road, and its name honors the curry dish that became a signature dish at Siam Pad Thai in Kettering, Christman said.
Salt Block Biscuit Company
A new bakery that will feature a variety of flavored biscuits, cookies, cakes, cobblers and meat pies is coming to downtown Dayton’s Fire Blocks District.
Justin Mohler, founder of Salt Block Biscuit Company, told this news outlet he has signed a lease to open a small bakery and cafe at 115 E. Third St. The 1,000-square-foot space will seat 20 to 24 and could open as early as this fall, Mohler said.
Salt Block Biscuit Company will serve open-faced biscuit entrees and a variety of flavored biscuits for breakfast and lunch, and its “raised meat pies” are “kind of our family-style meal option for take-home,” Mohler said.
My Favorite Muffin

The My Favorite Muffin cafe and bakery in the Cross Pointe Center in Centerville has been serving up its specialty for nearly a quarter-century, and it soon might have some company in the Dayton area.
Brian Evans, franchise development director for the Deerfield, Illinois-based My Favorite Muffin chain, said the company is looking to add locations in the Dayton region, perhaps in the downtown Dayton area.
The new stores may be a similar cafe-like concept that has worked since 1995 at Cross Pointe, or they might be a streamlined, smaller bakery concept that focuses less on sandwiches and lunch fare and has smaller square-footage requirements.
Deg’s Flame Grilled Chicken and Agnes All Natural Grill
Two locally owned restaurants are gearing up to open their second locations inside the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, and managers at both eateries say they have every intention of keeping their existing locations open.
Deg’s Flame Grilled Chicken, which has operated in The Greene Town Center for more than two years, and Agnes All Natural Grill, which opened a restaurant inside the Dayton Mall earlier this year, have both chosen the Fairfield Commons Mall for their second locations.

Original Rib House
The Original Rib House on East National Road in Vandalia has closed, marking the end of an era.
A Vandalia restaurant served tens of thousands of meals under two brand concepts over the last 54 years.
“It’s the end of an era,” Bill Brusman said. His father Harold operated the former Vandalia Cafeteria and the former Vandalia Motel and Coffee Shop in other locations in town, meaning that the Brusman family has been serving food to Vandalia residents for nearly a century.
