Resume of UD grad ‘jumped off the page,’ Miami Twp. picks trustee

Local attorney and University of Dayton graduate Terry Posey Jr. has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Miami Twp. board of trustees.

Miami Twp. Trustees President John Morris said Posey’s qualifications easily stood out over applicants for a seat on the board.

“We had a number of outstanding candidates for this position…and Terry’s resume and history of service just jumped off the page,” he said.

Posey, a 40-year-old attorney with a Dayton law firm, was appointed Tuesday night to fill the township’s vacant trustee position. Morris and Trustee Don Culp picked him over four other candidates.

Posey’s experience as a “business counselor, a litigator and (in) risk avoidance” were all cited by Morris as strengths he said he will bring to the job.

“I am personally very excited to have Mr. Posey joining us up here,” he said.

A University of Dayton law school graduate, Posey joined the firm Gottschlich & Portune in May after several years at Thompson, Hine LLP.

“I look forward to working with you and continuing to provide effective and transparent government services for the citizens and businesses in Miami Twp.,” Posey told trustees.

“To the citizens of Miami Twp. I look forward to working with you in the future on your behalf and earning election to this position,” he added.

Posey fills a vacancy created after Doug Barry opted not to seek re-election for a term that ended last month.

Other applicants for the position, which pays about $20,000 a year, included:

• Mark Langdon, a real estate broker.

• Bob Matthews, a business analyst and former trustee.

• Randy Russell, a small business owner.

• Jason Schafer, a business executive.

In a letter applying for the job, Posey cited knowledge gained in his legal career as strengths that would help the township.

“In these positions, I have gained valuable experience in negotiation, identifying risk and working collaboratively (to) obtain the best outcomes for my clients based on their goals and expectations,” he wrote.

Posey earned a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Virginia. He is on the board of trustees and the executive committee for the Dayton Society of Natural History.

He and his wife Lindsey have lived in Miami Twp. for several years.

Posey will serve in the seat formerly occupied by Culp.

Culp was elected to a four-year term in 2017, but in November ran unopposed for the seat formerly occupied by Barry.

Culp then resigned the seat to which he was elected two years ago and was sworn in to Barry’s old seat Tuesday night.
