“If you learned CPR; Stop, Drop and Roll; smoke detectors, and kitchen safety, you’ve learned it from her,” said Fire Chief Chad Follick.
Hannahan is responsible for the Fire Day program at the Vandalia-Butler school’s Passport to Safety and implemented the Risk Watch program, both of which are fire prevention programs for kindergarten through third graders. She has helped with senior health in areas of wellness, fall prevention, memory care and fire prevention programs.
“Kim applied for and received thousands of dollars of grant money for the fire/injury prevention programs,” Follick said. “Kim implemented the Division of Fire’s free smoke detector and CO detector give-away programs, which included securing donations (grants) and funding to keep the program running.”
Hannahan has taught thousands hours of CPR, AED and first-aid classes and will receive the award in late September at a ceremony.
She retired on June 1. She had worked as a firefighter/paramedic, fire inspector and her last position in code enforcement.
Hannahan lives in Vandalia with her husband, Eric. They have two sons and two grandchildren.
