The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival Committee is hosting the Fifth Annual Sauerkraut Recipe Contest on Oct. 3, a week before the festival at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Waynesville.
Entries can be either sweet or savory and anything is allowed as long as it is edible and contains sauerkraut, preferably as the centerpiece of the dish.
Entries can be dropped off between 11 a.m. and noon at the Der Dutchman restaurant, 230 N. U.S. 42. Entrants are welcome to stay during the judging and will be allowed to sample the creations.
Entries will be judged on eye appeal, taste, creative use of sauerkraut and ease of preparation.
Bonus points will be given to entrants who correctly spell “sauerkraut” on their entrant forms.
All entries must be accompanied by two copies of the original recipe. Entry forms are available at the Waynesville Chamber of Commerce Office.
The Waynesville Sauerkraut festival is celebrating its 40th year from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11 along Main Street.
This year’s festival features 460 arts and crafts booths from over 25 states, 58 specialty food booths run by 30 area nonprofit organizations, and more than 14,000 pounds of sauerkraut.
Admission to the event and contest are both free.
