Serial arsonist sentenced to 15 years

HAMILTON— A woman charged with setting fires in homes and garages in the city’s 4th Ward was sentenced to 15 years in prison today, July 1.

Gina Gray, 43, of the 1200 block of Hunt Avenue, entered a guilty plea in May to 12 counts of arson before Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Sage. Sage imposed the sentence after reviewing the results of a court ordered psychological evaluation.

Specifically, Gray pleaded guilty to 12 counts: seven counts of aggravated arson and five counts of arson. Three counts of aggravated arson were merged as a part of the plea agreement.

Police said Gray — who has past convictions for aggravated arson in 1996 and a history of arrests for soliciting and loitering to engage in prostitution — confessed to setting the fires.

Gray was developed as a suspect in the arsons that occurred in 2007 and 2008 because she was seen by emergency workers at several crime scenes while they were investigating.

On at least two occasions, Gray said she started a fire that did not do enough damage and she went back to reignite it, according to detectives. There is no evidence Gray used an accelerant to set the fires, but lit paper and garbage.

Gray’s elderly parents were in court to support her and family members spoke on her behalf.
